Using a compass in the rainforest is similar to using one in any other environment, but there are a few additional considerations to keep in mind.
- Make sure that your compass is in good working order and that the needle is functioning properly.
- Hold the compass flat in your hand, with the direction of travel arrow pointing away from you.
- Turn your body until the red end of the compass needle is aligned with the red “N” on the compass housing. This will orient you to magnetic north.
- Use the direction of travel arrow to determine the direction you need to go. For example, if you want to travel due east, you would point the arrow to the right of the “N” on the compass housing.
- Walk in the direction indicated by the direction of travel arrow, keeping the compass oriented so that the needle stays aligned with the “N” on the compass housing.
It’s important to note that some trees in the rainforest, particularly those with high iron content, can interfere with the accuracy of a compass. If you are having difficulty using your compass, try moving to a different location or using a map in conjunction with your compass to help determine your position and direction of travel.
